On January 28-30, 2004, hundreds of voices connected in a new way during the First International Online Conference for Business as Agent of World Benefit. Using collaborative online technology supplied by iCohere, a global space was created for the 850+ registrants in 50+ countries to come together and discuss, inquire and dream about how business can be an agent for world benefit.

The philosophy of the conference was inspired by the words of Margaret Mead: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

In an attempt to begin connecting these groups of "thoughtful, committed citizens" in new ways, this first online conference focused on exploring the intersection of business and society in a search for innovative business practices that, if nurtured, could transform the way we do business around the world. The program included sessions and discussions on:

  • How to become involved in the World Inquiry
  • What are the innovative business practices that are currently emerging
  • How to create a meaningful inquiry into business practices in your region?
  • The role that research and academic curriculum can play in the World Inquiry

Hosted by the BAWB Team at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University, the conference included live chat discussions, an exhibition hall, keynote and workshop presentations by a variety of scholars and practioners, as well as threaded discussions born from and sustained by participantsÕ own specific areas of interest.
